A natural death
Vinegar? You use it in certain recipes but did you know it also doubles up as one of the best ingredients to put together a good pest control spray. The acidity in vinegar is the powerful killer that can annihilate or repel ants, mosquitoes, fruit flies, spiders and many other types of insects. Vinegar is a contact type insecticide safe for humans and pets which has to be directly sprayed on the bug.
Vinegar contains water and acetic acid and has a pH level of 2.5 in most of its types. It also contains microbial properties. To increase its effectiveness you can pair it with oils such as tea tree oil, lemon rind oil, or orange peel oil.
Apart from vinegar, there are other types of insecticides you can make at home. Here is a comprehensive list:
Citrus fruits: Citrus fruits such as grapes, lemons and oranges make great home pesticides. Remove the flesh of half a grapefruit and leave it face down on the ground. Insects will be drawn to it and then get trapped. Boil the peel of an orange. Let the solution sit overnight. Add in a few drops of liquid soap. Then pour into a spray bottle. Very effective on insects.
Garlic: Garlic has a pungent smell which acts as a natural repellent. Blend two whole garlic bulbs with a little water to make a puree. Let it sit overnight. Put it in a bottle along with a good amount of vegetable oil, a little soap and enough water. Add some onion and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Watch the insects disappear.
Coffee and sand: Insects abhor the smell of coffee and the texture of sand, which they find difficult to crawl upon. Scatter some grains of coffee or sand in areas prone to insect attacks. See the difference.
- You can also mix 1 teaspoon of neem oil to 1 liter of water and then add in a tiny amount of dishwashing detergent, which will make an effective insect spray for your garden.
- Place cinnamon sticks in the kitchen and sprinkle some ground cinnamon in outdoor areas. Both will keep insects away.
But what about ultra resilient cockroaches, who will simply stick around no matter what you do?. Well, here are 3 best cockroach killing insecticides according to current market reports in 2023:
TERRO T500 Indoor Multi-Surface Roach Killing Bait: This comes in little cartridges that are filled with a mixture of food and slow acting poison. The delayed action of the poison also means that it allows the cockroach to pass on the poison to its friends before it dies.
Combat Max Roach Killing Gel: The main advantage of using a gel based insecticide such as this one is that you can apply it in all those crevices and cracks where cockroaches love to hide.
Black Flag Roach Trap: As the name suggests, this is a trap with a sticky surface that has a lethal adhesive that will cost the roaches not only their lives but also their limbs. Safest to use when children are around because they will stay clear of this contraption.
