Thinking of buying an air purifier but confused about whether every room will need a separate purifier?

Be sure that you don’t really need an air purifier for every room. And do consider the following factors before spending on separate purifiers for separate rooms:

The number of rooms in the house which you regularly occupy and therefore need an air purifier for.
The kind of air quality problems you need to tackle.
Calculating the room size in square feet so you can match it with the correct model of purifier.
Your budget.

While the above conditions may vary in different homes, on an average every house has 5 rooms. So the question you need to ask yourself is how much will you be able to afford to get air purifier coverage for multiple rooms? It is important to arrive at an estimate as buying cheap, low-spec air purifiers can be even worse than having no air purifiers at all. Remember to choose quality over quantity every time – a decision that will save you headaches in the long run. Moreover, ask yourself – what’s the use of placing a purifier in an area you don’t use? So don’t be worried about rooms that are rarely entered into or occupied..

The other important thing to remember is the kind of relief you need. A wide variety of contaminants or their combinations require a “real” air purifier that will permanently remove them from your air. Other problems such as dust mites will need a High-Efficiency Particulate Air Filter (HEPA) filter for removal. On the other hand, odors and airborne chemical substances can be cleansed successfully with an activated carbon filter. Similarly, people with allergies and asthma problems or those with pets need specific types of filters to rid their indoor air of these allergens. The basic minimum you need is a HEPA model that gives you sufficient room coverage. If a purifier doesn’t specify room size, you can safely assume that it is generally good for a small room.

If you suffer from colds or particular health issues, you may consider buying a purifier that has a germ-killing feature such as an ionizer or ozone generator. Others come with advanced convenience features like self-off timers, a quiet mode, smartphone control and air quality reports.

What an air purifier will not do however is cool the room. That is the job of an air cooler. Air purifiers don’t come with any air cooling mechanism. They resemble fans in that they use electrical, mechanical, or hybrid air filters to circulate air within a closed space.

However, many people are mistaken as they keep getting a breeze of cool air when the air purifier is running.This happens because the purifier acts like a fan. The cooling feeling depends on the air purifier’s air delivery rate (CADR), which usually varies between 80-300 CFM but is significantly lower than the CFM of a ceiling or desk fan which is 1,000 or more. And just as you would keep a fan on all day and night during summer, you can also keep running a purifier 24 x 7 as they don’t run the risk of overheating, breaking down, or releasing harmful byproducts. Remain certain that the air purifier will purify the surrounding air of the room it is in by eliminating 99.97% of contaminant particles.

So finally, you brought home an air purifier. But how would you know if it’s working alright?

Here are some checkpoints to look out for:

Check the power indicator light on the purifier’s panel.

Some purifiers come with a touchscreen panel. The user manual will tell you which lights indicate power. If the purifier isn’t working even when the power light is on that means the filter needs replacing. In this case, the filter indicator light will be on.

Test the airflow.

All air purifiers have a built-in fan, which draws in the indoor air. The fan working properly is a sign that the air purifier is working.

Check the filters inside the air purifier.

The sureshot way to tell if your purifier is working is to first carefully remove the front lid of the air purifier. Next, remove all the removable filters. If you see dirt, dust mites, and debris stuck on these filters, you’ll know that the purifier has been working properly. But work doesn’t stop there. You need to clean the pre-filter of the air purifier. The cleaning can be done by using water and soap. After the cleaning is over, let the filter dry for 15-30 minutes before assembling all the filters back into their places after which you can turn the purifier on. Let the filter do its work of filtering the air for sometime. Then turn it off. Check the pre-filter again. If the filter is dirty with particulate matter that is a sign that your air purifier is working perfectly.

Use a separate air quality monitor.

Though your air purifier already has a digital air monitor built into it, these monitors don’t always show correct readings because the sensors inside them are cheaper and hence less accurate. A separate digital air quality monitor can be very useful as they are specifically manufactured for air quality checking purposes and will show accurate readings and therefore help you to check the difference in air quality before and after using the air purifier.

Use a chemical testing kit.

A chemical air quality test kit lets you test the air for different contaminants such as pollen, dander, airborne mold spores, volatile organic compounds, and other airborne pollutants. Turn the purifier off, conduct the test and then turn the purifier back on. Repeat the test after a gap of 5-6 hours. If the results of the second test aren’t better than the first that is an indication that your air purifier is not working.

Finally, there are some simple rules to follow to keep your air purifier in good condition and make it work for a longer period of time:

Read the user manual carefully. Note the instructions carefully to use the air purifier effectively.
While using the purifier keep your doors and windows closed.
Set the timer on your purifier so it turns off automatically when you are not around.
Check your purifier’s recommended hours of use and don’t exceed the stipulated time limit.
Make sure to clean the pre-filter once or twice in a week to get better results.
It is important you replace the HEPA filter once every six months because filters that get highly contaminated retain in them harmful pollutants that can harm your health.
For a new air purifier that you have just purchased, don’t forget to remove the plastic cover of the filters inside the purifier.
