Are you an introvert?

If your personality has introversion then you would be termed as an introvert by Carl Jung, the psychiatrist who coined the terms introvert and extrovert. While introverts look within themselves to recharge their minds, extroverts often seek this energy in outside sources or friends.

Moreover, just being shy or quiet doesn't mark you out to be an introvert. You are an introvert if you can identify with some or all of these signs:

  • You need a quiet space to concentrate
  • You are reflective yet self-aware
  • You need time to taking decisions
  • You feel comfortable in your own company
  • You are not too fond of group work
  • You prefer writing over talking
  • You feel tired after being in a crowd
  • You have a few very close friends
  • You daydream or visualize solving a problem
  • You rest by retreating into your own mind

The brains of introverts often work differently from those of extroverts. Research has revealed that introverts have a higher blood flow to their frontal lobe than extroverts do.

Introvert brains also react differently to dopamine, which is the chemical that turns on the reward system of the brain. While extrovert brains get an excited buzz from their reward center, introverts just tend to feel run-down by it.

Interestingly, even within introverts there are types of introversion. Major four subtypes cover:

  • Social introverts who prefer small groups and quiet settings over crowds
  • Thinking introverts with creative imaginations who daydream a lot
  • Anxious introverts who need alone time because most times they feel awkward or shy around people.
  • Restrained/inhibited introverts who think before they act take a longer time to take action and will not decide on a whim.

Whatever the case, introverts can still be friendly and have all the skills needed to be a boss or leader. They may not open up to everyone but will develop deep friendships with people who match their wavelengths.
