Good personal hygiene is crucial if you want to protect yourself from getting gastro or infectious diseases such as colds and flu or the more serious COVID-19.  Washing your hands with soap will remove the germs that can infect you and cause an illness. It will also prevent the spread of disease to other people. The germs responsible for spreading a disease can be passed on when you touch other people, or get feces (poo) on your hands, eat or touch contaminated food, or come into contact with dirty surfaces or objects.

Personal hygiene means:

  • cleaning your body every day
  • washing your hands with soap especially after visiting the toilet
  • brushing your teeth two times in a day
  • covering your nose and mouth with a tissue (or your sleeve) when sneezing or coughing
  • washing your hands after cuddling your pets and other animals

Poor personal hygiene can lead to the incubation of infections such as:

  • COVID-19 and other infectious diseases
  • Diarrhea, especially gastroenteritis
  • Respiratory infections such as colds and flu
  • Staph infections
  • Worm-related conditions, such as threadworms
  • Scabies
  • Trachoma, which is an eye infection that can cause blindness
  • Tooth decay

Washing your body every day is of utmost importance.

Make sure to bathe and shower every day. Wash your armpits and genitals well to prevent skin irritations and germs. You can use soap, shower gel or a hypoallergenic body wash. For the sensitive parts, wash with plain or salt water. Post your bath, apply deodorant to your armpits to keep away body odor. Wear clean and dry clothes. Sweaty and dirty garments need to be cleaned properly and then hung in the sunshine to dry. If excessive sweating is something that is bothering you, you should see a doctor to resolve the problem as soon as you can.

Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Use a scrubbing brush to clean the dirty nails.

You should wash your hands:

  • Before and after you eat or cook food
  • After a nappy change
  • When you touch a sick person or clean up vomit or body fluids
  • After blowing your nose
  • When you treat cuts or wounds
  • When you touch rubbish, dirty surfaces, and objects
  • After cuddling pets or handling farm animals

It is especially important to wash your hands before and after cooking food.

The process works two ways. You won’t contaminate the food and the bacteria from raw meat will not contaminate your hands. Bad breath is another area that needs looking into. It can be caused by poor oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing your teeth two times in a day will reduce gum disease and reduce the chances of future tooth decay.
