Microscopic organisms such as viruses and bacteria when ingested through water will manifest themselves in diseases that are known as waterborne diseases. These diseases spread through water.

The most commonly found waterborne diseases are:

Typhoid fever

The fever keeps increasing gradually and manifests as muscle aches, fatigue, swelling and either loose motion or constipation. It can be prevented by vaccines and caution must be taken to avoid unbottled and clean water. Treatment is through antibiotics.

Giardia

The pathogens which cause this disease are found in ponds and streams. Brought about by a parasite, the infection will go away in a few weeks but for some patients, they will experience intestinal problems for years to come. Symptoms are abdominal pain, cramps and bloating, diarrhea, nausea and weight loss. There is no vaccine for Giardia and when the condition worsens, anti-parasitic and antibiotics are the commonly prescribed medications.

E Coli

The disease can spread through contaminated water and food and also through ground beef. While some stains of the pathogen are beneficial others are not and can result in life-threatening symptoms especially for children and older adults. E Coli can be prevented by drinking safe water and cooking ground beef thoroughly.

Salmonella

Salmonella can infect people who eat food or drink water that has been contaminated with feces. Undercooked food is a potent source of disease. Symptoms are pretty defined: blood in stool, chills, headache and diarrhea. Salmonella can dehydrate the body leading it to a state of grave danger. Treatment may require hospitalization and require fluids and antibiotics.

Cholera

This occurs in areas where hygiene is poor and poverty is rampant. It causes severe dehydration and diarrhea, nausea and muscle cramps. Prevention is better than cure. Frequent hand washing is required, eating hot and cooked food is advisable and of course drinking safe water is mandatory.

Dysentery

The disease shows up as severe diarrhea and blood and mucus in the stool. Other symptoms are stomach cramps and pain, fever, nausea, vomiting and dehydration. Most cases are treatable by antibiotics but some strains are antibiotic resistant. Good hygiene needs to be practiced. Eating outside food from street vendors is not advisable. Water needs to be bottled and sealed before it is deemed fit for drinking.

Hepatitis A

This is a liver infection that is caused by contaminated water and food and through contact with another carrier of the infection. Symptoms are varied ranging from fatigue, clay-colored bowel movements, jaundice, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain and pain near the liver, loss of appetite and sudden fever. Though not common, in some cases, it can take on a severe form and last several months. The vaccine needs to be taken. Runny eggs and raw or rare meats are best avoided. So is unbottled water and food from street vendors.

Germs can enter the body through the air also. The portable mini air purifier can prevent that. About the same size as your water bottle, the purifier cleans the indoor air in a flat 10 minutes. Very useful in personal spaces such as your car, bedroom or office.
