Tips for a healthy summer

Although coughs have a role in cleaning out irritants and infections from the body, a persistent cough can be irritating and troublesome.

Eat light

Rich and heavy meals with lots of excess fat and simple carbohydrates increases body heat. It’s therefore good to have lighter meals that have in them seasonal fruits and veggies such as watermelon, citrus fruits, tomatoes, yogurt and cucumbers. These fruits and vegetables are ideal for summer as they have high water content and are helpful in regulating body temperature.

Drink a lot

Extreme heat and sweating during summer can leave you dehydrated. Make sure you drink lots of fluids. Coconut water, iced tea and fresh fruit juices are healthy choices. When stepping out, don’t forget your water bottle. When exercising, take regular intervals and hydrate your body during these breaks.

Take protection

The scorching heat can create problems for your skin and eyes. To avoid sunburns, use a sunscreen with SPF 30, SPF 40 or SPF 50 as per your skin type. Wear sunglasses to protect eye damage from the glaring rays of the sun.

Rest adequately

Since summer days are long and exhausting, your body will need adequate rest to prevent a collapse. Regular sleep at night for 7 to 9 hours is needed, a lack of which may leave your body feeling weak and exhausted.

Avoid caffeinated and carbonated drinks

Tea, coffee and fizzy drinks can dehydrate your body. Lower alcohol and caffeinated drink consumption during summer. Opt for refreshing mocktails instead.

Don’t eat outside food

Eating outside from roadside stalls may increase your chances of contamination. You may suffer from food-borne illnesses during summer. The reason is that bacteria tend to multiply faster in warmer weather. Avoid getting contaminated by staying away from outside food.

Exercise with caution

Extreme heat and sweat during summer can make exercising difficult and very uncomfortable. Morning exercises will prevent overexposure to the sun. Similarly, walking, running or cycling in the morning or evening is advised as the sun’s rays won’t be too harsh on the skin.

Gorge on berries

Rich in antioxidants, strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries will help strengthen your immune system, boost skin health and help fight off various illnesses.

Maintain good hygiene

Practice good hygiene habits during the summer and throughout the year. Wash your hands and face frequently and take daily showers. Also remember to wash your bedsheets and pillow cases regularly.
