7 Home Remedies for skin care during summer

Summer is a welcome respite from the cold weather in temperate climates but in tropical climates summer brings with it, its own set of problems.

In general, in summer, when the weather gets warmer and there is an increase in humidity in the environment, the skin’s sebaceous glands begin to produce excess sebum (natural oil). This oil clogs the surface of the skin, leading to stickiness, grease and blocked pores.

 

Acne breakouts are a common problem, especially for people with oily skin. This happens because the bacteria and oils in the skin mix with the sweat causing clogged pores and acne.

Moreover, the sun shines for longer hours in summer and the skin is exposed to harmful UV rays. To protect the skin from damage, the body increases the production of the pigment melanin, which has photoprotective qualities. But excess melanin can cause the skin to become darker and more tanned. Other problems that can arise are itchy skin, prickly heat, sunburn and rash that are caused by the skin’s sensitivity to the sun.

 

Here are six home remedies to help you tackle summer skin problems:

Lemon & Coffee: Lemon has vitamin C, an effective skin brightening ingredient, while coffee serves as a great exfoliator. Mix one tablespoon of coffee with one tablespoon of lemon juice in a bowl making sure to eliminate all lumps. Apply this mixture to your face leaving it on for 15 minutes before rinsing it off.

Aloe Vera:

This plant is loved for its antioxidant and antibacterial properties. It keeps your skin moisturized and hydrated all throughout summer and has a soothing effect on the skin. After applying the pulp of this plant directly on the skin, you need to massage it gently for about 20 minutes. Keep it for about a further 10 minutes before washing it off.

Turmeric:

This Asian spice is known for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties that help reduce skin inflammation. It is a natural skin brightener and adds a nice glow to the skin. Mix one teaspoon of turmeric with three tablespoons of lemon juice. Apply it on your face letting the mixture sit for 20 minutes after which it needs to be washed off.

Honey & Yogurt:

Honey helps preserve the natural moisture of the skin while yogurt helps brighten it. Add one tablespoon of honey to a cup of yogurt and apply the mixture on your skin for around 10 minutes. Rinse it off with cold water.

Papaya:

This fruit is both a mild exfoliator and cleanser helping to remove excess oil and dirt from the skin and giving it a soft and glowy feel. Add some amount of sandalwood and fuller earth to freshly mashed papaya, mixing it well into a mask. Apply the mask on your face leaving it on for about 20 minutes. Wash it off with cold water.

Almond Oil & Sandalwood:

Almond oil rejuvenates and brightens your skin while sandalwood lightens the skin tone. Add almond oil to a paste made out of sandalwood. Leave the mixture on your skin for 20 minutes. Then rinse it off.

Tomato:

A natural source of essential vitamins, tomato improves the skin’s texture, brings back its natural shine and also adds a glow. Smash half a tomato doing away with the lumps. Add some honey to the tomato. Leave this paste on your skin for 15 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water.
