Prickly and stinging

Not only are allergies of concern, they can be a source of persistent trouble. Itchy skin can be very irritating, painful and embarassing. Allergies are caused mostly by allergens which can range from pollen of certain plants (say, for instance, poison ivy) or they may break out as a reaction to a particular medication or food. Measles or chickenpox can also cause a rash.

An allergist is a person who can diagnose the condition. But the two most common allergies are Eczema and Hives. Hives, also known as urticaria, are characterized by red bumps or welts that appear on the body. If the condition lasts more than six weeks, it is categorized as acute urticaria. Chronic hives are very commonly seen in women and can prove challenging because they are not easily controlled. The cause is largely not known. Some hives cases happen because of an autoimmune disorder, where the body attacks its own tissues in response to a trigger. When hives are chronic, it may also be a case of thyroid disease or other hormonal problems. In most cases, the exact cause is difficult to arrive at.

Eczema is another bothersome skin condition. It is characterized by dry, red, irritated and itchy skin. In some cases, the infected skin may show as small, fluid-filled bumps that ooze a liquid that is clear or yellowish in color. And usually, people affected by eczema often demonstrate a family history of allergies.

Another type of skin reaction is known as Contact Dermatitis. As the name suggests, the condition shows up when the skin comes in contact with an allergen. The skin develops a rash, blisters, itching and burning. Allergens can include everything from soaps, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, shampoos or even excessive exposure to water, metals like nickel,  adhesives, nail polish, topical medications, plants and latex gloves. At other times, an allergen won’t cause a skin reaction unless the skin also happens to be exposed to sunlight. This condition is termed photoallergic contact dermatitis. It can happen when the skin is exposed to products such as shaving lotion, sunscreen and some perfumes.

An insect bite can also cause a rash and be very painful and sometimes be so serious as to necessitate a visit to the hospital.

To prevent yourself from insect bites, try the noiseless and non-toxic insect killer. It is safe for the environment. It has a mosquito attracting light source and kills mosquitoes by trapping them into the mosquito tray under a strong cyclone. Perfect for both the nursery and the bedroom.
