The good soldiers

Vital vitamins your body needs

Let’s think for a moment that you are a king. For you to maintain your strength and power, you would need your generals. Well there are 9 essential vitamins and minerals your body needs to survive. Here they are:

Vitamin A, also known as retinol, is found in many dairy products and yellow or orange colored fruits and vegetables such as cantaloupe, mangoes and apricots. It helps the body combat infections, helps in maintaining healthy vision, plays an important role in heart, lung and kidney health, keeps the skin healthy by reducing the effects of free radicals and also strengthens bones and teeth.

Cereals, flour, breads and pastas come packed with the goodness of B vitamins. Vitamin B is mainly found in leafy green vegetables, animal proteins and whole grains. The major types of B vitamins are used by the body to convert food into energy that is needed for the growth, development and creation of new cells in the body. The benefits of this vitamin don’t stop here. It helps in the maintenance of normal brain function and memory and is also required in the normal metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. It improves the cholesterol balance in the body by lowering LDL (bad cholesterol) and increasing HDL (good cholesterol) lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke. It is also needed for the production of normal blood cells and for proper functioning of the nervous system.

Vitamin C contains antioxidants that help promote healthy growth of tissues. It is found in fruits and vegetables and protects our cells from the damage caused by free radicals. It also helps the body make collagen, an important protein the body needs. That apart, Vitamin C reduces the risk of catching colds, helps us maintain skin and tissue health and also strengthens bones and teeth. It also facilitates iron absorption in people who suffer from iron deficiency.

Vitamin D is activated by ultraviolet light and is absorbed by the body directly from sun exposure. It is also found in cod liver oil, fatty fish, fortified juices, milk and cereals. It is essentially for building immunity, maintains nervous system functions and keeps our bones healthy. It also regulates the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood.

For our organs to function properly, we need Vitamin E. It can easily be sourced from vegetable oils, avocados, spinach, seeds, nuts and whole grains. It keeps our immune system strong through its antioxidant benefits and helps with the dilation of blood vessels to prevent the clotting of blood. It also fortifies our cells from damage from toxins, helps in the proper functioning of muscles, reduces risk of cancer and heart disease, and also reduces our risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Vitamin K is a protein-rich vitamin usually found in leafy green vegetables and together with calcium keeps our bones healthy. It aids the rapid healing of wounds and creates strong bones. Likewise, calcium is crucial to healthy bone growth and can be found in dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt. It can also be derived from tofu, spinach, soy and rhubarb.  It facilitates the proper working of the muscles and the nerves require this important vitamin to carry messages from the brain to the different parts of the body. It also regulates our blood pressure keeping it within permissible limits.

Found abundantly in red meats, leafy green vegetables and legumes, iron helps the body transport oxygen to the different parts and organs. It improves our immunity and provides energy. It also improves our brain function, increasing our ability to concentrate. Our body also needs zinc, although in small amounts. Zinc can be found in plenty in red meat, poultry, beans, nuts and whole grains. It boosts immunity and reduces the risk of cancer. It improves memory and reduces symptoms of common cold.
